Too often "experimental" is a synonym for "inaccessible" or even worse, "unlistenable." SS has seen this moniker attached to Bound Stems a few times (experimental that is, not those other things), but from the music we've heard so far, the band is dancing on that tightrope between pop accessibility and artistic indulgence.
Bound Stems debut LP, Appreciation Night, won't be in stores until next summer, but in anticipation of that there's already an EP available now from Flameshovel.
The Logic of Building the Body Plan features seven songs, including two from the upcoming LP. It mixes ragged but accomplished guitars, and off-center timing and rhythms with beautiful pop-ish melodies, so in the end the disc dishes up some generally straight ahead (and very fine) rock, but with some ambitious fine tuning on the fringes that makes them unique.
In other words, they are good.
