When Google Earth came out, it certainly had that initial "wow" factor that makes for big blogger buzz. But after fooling around with the ultra-ambitious world-mapping tool for a while, the novelty wore off pretty quick. Seriously, the satellite photos never get low enough to the ground to make out your ex's apartment window, and the search feature needs an awful lot of work. A cool idea, but not much more.
But now, for our purposes as music geeks the boys at Google Earth seem to finally be onto something. See Thursday's Online Scavenger Hunt that lets you scan the globe for fellow fans, upload photos and even see who's attending which upcoming shows.
We're not exactly big Thursday fans here at SS, but imagine the possibilities for future acts: "Help Find Pete Doherty Before The Fuzz" or better even, a world-wide, cyber pub crawl with Shane MacGowan. Now you're talkin' our language.
