On July 11 Soul Asylum will drop its first album in eight years with The Silver Lining. The disc will also mark the final recordings of original bassist Karl Mueller, who died of throat cancer on June 17, 2005. Filling his shoes is Tommy Stinson, the former Replacement, current G and R bassist, and long-time friend of Mueller. Perhaps Stinson is wisely lining up a back-up gig considering the recent arrest of Axl, but the 'Mats connection goes even further, as the current drummer, Michael Bland, also spent some time in Paul Westerberg's solo outfit.
Lineup changes aside, the band's ragged, guitar-driven sound appears in tact based on the three track previews available on its official site. Particularly promising is "Lately," the hardest track, recalling the band's Grave Dancers Union era sound.
