Fall Out Boy's bandwagon-jumping cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" kind of sucks. So you might ask, "Why are you posting about it here, sonic slang? You guys don't even like their shrill brand of overrated emo-punk."

Fine, the girl's not Alicia Keys. But her voice is pretty effective, if surprisingly low-register, and the shoe-gazey production is solid. Does it improve on the original? Well duh - of course not. But if she was an unknown, plenty of bloggers would be jumping on board the "next big thing" train. The accompanying video is another story all together.
Amid all the hoopla surrounding Scott Weiland's defection/firing (take your pick) from Velvet Revolver, and subsequent reformation of Stone Temple Pilots for a summer tour and probable new album, we almost forgot - dude's got issues: Weiland is now set to serve eight days in jail for drunk driving, hopefully before STP launches its 65-date tour on 5.17.
As reported yesterday, Coldplay is offering a free download of "Violet Hill" (from the forthcoming Viva la Vida disc due 6.12) for the next week. We grabbed ours this morning and gave it a couple spins. Snap judgment: Though it's no huge departure from the piano-laden hits that Coldplay made its name on, the track is on the muscular side for Martin and co., with a dirty guitar riff that darkens the track into new (ish) territory for the band. Not too shabby.

After the mega-platinum success of Confessions, Everyone wanted to crown Usher the new MJ (especially Usher himself, methinks), but our money is still on Ne-Yo. "Closer" isn't the drastic departure from "boring" R&B he'd been promising for Year of the Gentleman, but if it ain't broke...

The latest Daytrotter session features two new tracks off Death Cab for Cutie's upcoming Narrow Stairs. Cath, and a quote from Old School that's both still funny, and a perfect summation for the majority Ben Gibbard's lyrics: "Love...she's a motherfucker."
"Cath" is a carried by a solid Chris Walla guitar riff, and would have made a more suitable first single than "I Will Possess Your Heart," and "Talking Bird" follows the Death Cab piano ballad-to-guitar fuzz formula that's perfect for a crappy NYC day like we say today. Using the buzz around new single "Pork and Beans," Weezer, music-focus social network Buzznet and Conscious Alliance, the non-profit organization that
distributes food and resources to U.S. communities most in need, have joined forces to stage an online foodfight that calls for Buzznet users to throw pork and beans at their friend's profiles by posting a special code in the notes section. Friends can then retaliate, things get messiy and we all do some good.
