2008, Reprise
Verdict: C+
The brilliant one-two punch of Definitely, Maybe, and What’s the Story Morning Glory? branded me an Oasis fan for life, but it’s been some time since I expected big things out of the new stuff. Noel Gallagher makes more headlines for his mouth than his music, and the last few releases, though competent exercises in sneering Brit rock, lack both the hooks and the energy that helped the band’s earlier work bring a swagger back to rock and roll. Lately there’s been a palpable and growing buzz for Dig Out Your Soul, indicating that perhaps the drought it over. Should we believe the hype?
After a couple times through Oasis’ 7th official LP, I have to admit, I like this disc. Only problem is, I like it the same way I liked Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, Heathen Chemistry and Don’t Believe the Truth. That is, I’ll probably give it a few more spins, then file it away next to The Verve’s Forth and Travis’ The Boy with No Name. All the pieces are still there – Beatles-aping couplets, classic rock riffs and the Gallagher boys’ “f you” vocals, but despite a couple of home runs in the gorgeous ballad “I’m Outta Time” and driving lead single “The Turning,” this is business as usual and only serves to remind us how damned good these guys used to be.
